Articles >> Carlow Nationalist, Jan. 14 2009HOLLYWOOD and Carlow’s golden girl, actress Saoirse Ronan, was nominated for two IFTA awards this week and announced as the lead alongside Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell in her next movie. The Ardattin teen-ager’s glittering career looks set for further highs in 2009 with an Irish Television and Film Award nomination in the categories of Actresses in a Leading Role for City of Ember and in the Supporting Actress category for Death Defying Acts. The sixth annual IFTA Awards take place on Saturday 14 February at the Burlington Hotel, Dublin and will be broadcast that night on RTÉ One at 9.30pm. This week Saoirse’s latest film project, an upcoming WWII movie directed by Peter Weir called The Way Back, was also announced. Saoirse will star alongside Ed Harris and this week’s Golden Globe winner Colin Farrell in the movie, which is based on a true story about a group of soldiers who engineered a grueling escape from a Siberian labour camp in 1942. In this latest offering, Saoirse will take on the role of a Russian on the run who meets up with the fugitives and filming is expected to begin shortly, with a release date in 2010. Saoirse won two IFTA awards in 2008 for her Oscar-nominated role in Atonement. Unfortunately, she was unable to attend the 2008 IFTA Awards ceremony due to filming commitments in New Zealand but was announced as the winner at the IFTA awards by her latest co-star Colin Farrell. The much-anticipated movie The Lovely Bones staring Saoirse is also set for release in 2009. Daughter of Paul and Monica, Saoirse (14) is a past pupil of Ardattin National School and currently is a second year pupil at school's name.
